Killaloe / Ballina is situated on the banks of the River Shannon, about one kilometre below Lough Derg, in a valley hemmed in by the Slieve Bernagh mountains of Clare and the Arra hills of Tipperary. It is the centre of a beautiful and historic district - a land of legend and story, endowed by nature with a beauty unsurpassed along the Shannon basin.

History - Man first settled in the area over 6,000 years ago and the megalithic tombs are a link with that prehistoric era. The many ring forts date from Celtic times; while the oratories, churches and cathedral are monuments of the early Christian and medieval periods.

Our Bit - This is as far as we could go by (hire) boat. Since our travels there has been massive investment into the section from here to Limerick. Hopefully we'll be able to do this stretch when its complete. Ballina side of the River is the logical place to moor up, but its only a walk across the bridge to Killaloe.

Food

Galloping Hogan's

Galloping Hogan's ● Galloping Hogan's - is on the green opposite the moorings by the bridge. The pub is part of the original railway station which closed almost 50 years ago. The pub was always fairly crowded mainly with tourists using the bar and the attached restaurant. The food was excellent a pretty good seafood chowder) with a large menu (disguised as a old newspaper detailing the Titanic disaster for some unknown reason).
The service was fast and friendly with the staff warning us when last orders were due so that we could get another round in. As we were here for two nights the pub was obviously a favourite of ours. Plenty of outside seating if the weather is good.
