Norman CastleClonmacnois is the first mooring you reach if travelling south from Athlone. I know it shouldn't be in my Bars listing but it was on our route and is definitely worth a visit. The moorings are very exposed which makes it difficult to moor in high winds especially if you had a high sided boat like ours. It is also out of place in these pages as it does not have any pubs. The panoramic picture above show the religious site some parts of which date from the 8th Century. Click on any of the building to see a close up of that part of the site. The picture on the right shows the remains of the Norman keep which is to the south of the site.
It is a place of pilgrimage for the Irish so perhaps is best avoided on Sunday's if you are just a tourist.
