Trying to pick colours, be it for text, borders or backgrounds is extremely challenging to put it mildly. Whatever you choose can be completely wrong when viewed by other people. Having said that by playing safe and picking 'plain' colours can lead to an extremely boring presentation. You should be able to use most anything providing you have taken time over selecting a complimentary set of colours. The link below to W3Schools will demonstrate this admirably.
