Palmares - This course is laid out on the side of a south-facing hill with fantastic views over the Lagos Bay and the Alvor estuary. The course is spread over a mixture of terrain, long slopes, beach terrain etc.. The first hole drops, some 300 plus feet, from the clubhouse down to the beach with great views toward the Cape. Be careful as you cross the railway line to the second, and before you do check out the old well by the green on the first hole. Five of the holes are placed on the sand dunes with a difficult long par-5 fifth runs parallel with the dunes and is exposed to the winds, which can be brisk coming off the sea. The rest of the course extends amongst the almond, fig, pine and palm trees. The views as you play your round are quite breathtaking (Check out the 16th). The clubhouse is spacious with good food and terraces that allow you to see for miles in most every direction. Its a course that we have played every time we go to the Algarve and its as good as ever. At present there are few villas clustering the fairways so the feeling of openness as you play is very refreshing. If you are planning a golf trip to the western Algarve, Palmares should definitely be on your short-list.
Directions: Follow the EN 125 towards Sagres. As you approach Lagos follow the signs to Meia Praia. If you miss the small sign and arrive at a roundabout do a full circle of the roundabout and return over the bridge. Take the first turn right at the sign post to Meia Praia. Follow the signs left at the next roundabout and then forward at the following roundabout. The course is at the far end of the beach.
